Traditional Essential Oils for Christmas Gifts

The most traditional Aromatherapy Essential Oil gifts at Christmas are, of course, Frankincense and Myrrh – two of the gifts reputedly brought to the baby Jesus by the Three Wise Men.

So, if you’re looking to fill the air with the aromas of Christmas and want oils with genuine therapeutic benefits why not try one of the following popular yet practical oils, many of which have calming and stress relieving properties to help bring a more relaxed and joyful atmosphere to your family Christmas this year.

Frankincense (Boswellia Carteri)
Frankincense slows down and deepens breathing, which is why it is so conducive to prayer. It is of benefit to those who cannot "switch off" and is an ideal oil for chronic worriers. It is also very helpful for mature or damaged skin.

Myrrh (Commiphora Myrrha)
The precious oil of Myrrh has been treasured by almost every civilisation for over four thousand years. It is best known for its beneficial effects on the skin but it also has an affinity with the digestive system and is believed by many to stimulate the immune system making it a popular choice in winter.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum)
The benefits of Cinnamon have been recognised since ancient times and it has also been used as a perfume and incense. It is warming for the body and uplifting for the mind, helping to soothe nervous exhaustion and feelings of failure. It is also used to ease a sluggish digestion, aches and pains and a shivering fever and is beneficial for stiff joints and muscles due to age or over-exertion. It is also warming for areas of poor circulation and is comforting if distressed. Cinnamon has been regarded as a ‘precious oil’ by many cultures and as such it makes a luxurious addition to any massage, room or bathing blend.

Neroli Absolute (Citrus Aurantium)
Neroli is a warm sweet oil, which has been revered for centuries for its positive effect on the human psyche. It is an ideal choice to counteract nervous exhaustion and emotional stress. It has an exquisite scent and the women of the royal families of Europe have used it as a perfume since the C16th.

Orange Sweet (Citrus Sinensis)
Orange Sweet is refreshing as well as mentally and physically uplifting and is commonly used to treat nervous tension and stress-related complaints. It has an affinity for the respiratory systems and is therefore also commonly used for treating typically wintertime problems of colds and flu. In addition, it is frequently used as an antiseptic and is also believed to be soothing and a good diuretic to relieve menstruation-related problems.

Cedarwood (Cedrus Atlantica)
From the “Tree of Eternal Life” Cedarwood has a deep, heady aroma with a hint of freshly chopped wood and crushed leaves. Cedarwood has been treasured by almost every civilisation. Solomon’s temple was made of Cedarwood as were the doors of the Egyptian tombs and even today documents of historical importance are still kept within the protective insect proof walls of cedar chests. Cedarwood also has a protective, preservative effect on the skin and its scent is long lasting, hence its historical use in skin preparations and perfume. It has an affinity with the respiratory system and is popular prior to bed after a high pressure day. Cedarwood can in some instances work where Lavender or Chamomile fail.
