Q&A: How to create a natural home fragrance this Christmas
Q: Can you recommend a blend of essential oils to fragrance my home this Christmas. I'm looking for a natural alternative to scented candles which tend to make my chest tight?
A: Some candles can make your chest feel tight because they contain other chemicals besides the essential oils. Joss Sticks can cause similar problems because the glue holding the incense on to the stick burns as well as the incense. The way to project essential oils into the air with the least risk of irritation to dinner party guests is with a burner. If children are around or there is dancing etc invest in an electric vaporiser (i.e. from Boots). In this instance choose oils to suit your mood or the Christmas mood. Frankincense, Myrrh and Orange Sweet with a generous proportion of Cinnamon for spice is a fabulous blend. It is only two generations ago when oranges were often the only Christmas gift impoverished children would get. They were commonly known as 'Golden Apples'.
Another of my favourites is Vanilla, Geranium and Lemongrass.
Method of application: oils added to a professional aromatherapy burner or add them to 100ml of alcohol and 25 mls of distilled water and pour in a spray bottle – shake before use.
